Sync AutoCAD tool palettes between computers
AutoCAD tool palettes are often edited inside a user's Windows profile, so a useful improvement can remain on one workstation. A controlled staging and network-library workflow lets a CAD manager publish approved palette files without treating every computer as an equal source.
Reviewed:
Avoid unmanaged peer-to-peer copies
- Choose one workstation or controlled folder as the publishing source.
- Use staging to bring palette files from the user profile into the source library.
- Review the resulting source-to-network comparison before the server copy changes.
- Configure consuming workstations according to your AutoCAD standards; LibSync does not change AutoCAD settings for you.
LibSync supports optional staging, reusable profiles, network targets and backups of files changed during the run. View LibSync for CAD libraries
Why palettes diverge
A user can add a tool, change an icon or update a block reference locally. Another workstation continues using its previous palette files, while the network library may contain a third version. Direct copying between profiles makes it unclear which state is approved.
Treat palette files like other CAD standards: edit in a controlled place, review the result and publish from one source. This prevents an older workstation from becoming the accidental master.
What LibSync staging does
A LibSync profile can define an optional staging folder and a mount location inside the source library. During an approved run, staged files are promoted into that source structure and then compared with the target or targets. Existing changed files are backed up before replacement.
Staging is still one-way and manually started. It does not monitor AppData continuously and does not merge palette changes made independently on several workstations.
Plan distribution separately
Publishing the approved palette library to a network share is one half of the process. Each AutoCAD workstation must also reference the intended location or receive the approved files through your managed workstation setup.
Test with a non-production profile or a small pilot group first. Palette files can depend on blocks, images and support paths, so verify the tools themselves rather than only checking that files exist.
Publish an approved palette update
Use a named CAD standards owner and one source profile for each palette set.
- 1
Finish and test locally
Open the edited tools in AutoCAD and confirm referenced blocks, commands and images on the authoring workstation.
- 2
Close AutoCAD for file handling
Avoid copying palette files while the application is still writing them.
- 3
Stage the palette files
Use the configured staging path to place the profile files at the correct relative location in the source library.
- 4
Preview source to network share
Review additions, modifications, renames and any target-only files before confirming.
- 5
Run and retain the backup
Complete the manual sync and keep its changed/deleted-file backup for the selected retention period.
- 6
Validate on a second computer
Load the approved palette through the organisation's AutoCAD configuration and test representative tools.
Tool palette release checklist
- One workstation or folder is the authorised source.
- AutoCAD is closed while palette files are staged.
- Dependent blocks, images and support paths are included or reachable.
- Target-only files are explained before deletion.
- A second computer tests actual tools after release.
AutoCAD palette synchronization FAQ
Does LibSync configure AutoCAD tool palette paths?
No. It synchronizes files. Configure AutoCAD profiles and support paths through your normal CAD deployment process.
Can two users merge palette edits automatically?
No. LibSync is one-way and does not merge concurrent changes. Choose an owner and approved publishing source.
Is AutoCAD required to run LibSync?
No. LibSync is a general Windows folder synchronization tool. AutoCAD is only relevant to creating and testing the palette content in this use case.
