How to edit AutoCAD DST files safely
To edit an AutoCAD DST file, close the sheet set in AutoCAD, keep a backup, then open it in a sheet-set editor and change the required sheet numbers, titles or properties. Save and reopen the result in AutoCAD to check it. This guide covers AutoCAD Sheet Set files, not embroidery DST files.

What you need to know first
- An AutoCAD .dst describes a sheet set; it is not a DWG drawing and does not contain drawing geometry.
- An embroidery .dst contains stitch instructions and must be opened with embroidery software, not a Sheet Set tool.
- Close the same sheet set in AutoCAD before writing changes from another application.
- Keep the original file available until AutoCAD has reopened and checked the edited sheet set.
Sheet Set Batch Editor opens AutoCAD DST files, supports batch property work and creates a backup before every write. View Sheet Set Batch Editor
What is an AutoCAD Sheet Set DST file?
Sheet Set Manager uses a .dst file as the catalogue for a project or drawing package. It records the sheet hierarchy, subsets, references and properties such as sheet numbers, titles, descriptions and custom project fields. The referenced DWG files stay separate on disk.
That separation is useful: a CAD manager can correct shared metadata without changing drawing geometry. It also means the DST and its referenced drawings must remain in a coherent folder structure. Moving only one part of the project can leave references unresolved.
AutoCAD DST versus embroidery DST
The extension alone does not identify the format. A file next to DWG drawings, project PDFs or a Sheet Set folder is likely an AutoCAD Sheet Set. A file delivered with machine-embroidery artwork is likely a Tajima-style stitch file.
Do not try to convert one type into the other. If the origin is unclear, ask the sender or inspect the surrounding files before choosing an application. Sheet Set Batch Editor is designed for AutoCAD Sheet Set data only.
Choose the properties you actually need to change
List the intended edits before opening the file: for example, a revision date across selected sheets, corrected sheet titles or a project-wide custom value. A narrow change set is easier to review than an unspecific cleanup.
For repeated values, prepare a CSV or TSV table with stable identifiers and clear column names. Sheet Set Batch Editor can import mapped fields across multiple sheets, while ordinary one-off changes can be made directly in the property panel.
A safe editing workflow
Treat the DST as shared project data. These steps keep the change reviewable and make recovery straightforward.
- 1
Identify the file and owner
Confirm that it is an AutoCAD Sheet Set DST and find out who currently owns the project data.
- 2
Close concurrent editors
Ask colleagues to close the sheet set in AutoCAD, and close it yourself before opening the standalone editor.
- 3
Open and inspect before editing
Check the tree, sheet count, subsets and a sample of known properties. Stop if the structure is not what you expect.
- 4
Make a bounded change
Edit the selected fields or use a mapped CSV/TSV import. Review the affected sheets before saving.
- 5
Save and retain the backup
Sheet Set Batch Editor creates a backup before writing. Keep that backup until validation is complete.
- 6
Reopen in the normal CAD workflow
Open the sheet set in AutoCAD, verify representative sheets and only then let the wider team continue.
Final check
- The sheet hierarchy and subsets still match the project.
- Sheet numbers and titles changed only where intended.
- Custom properties show the expected scope and values.
- AutoCAD can reopen the DST and resolve its referenced drawings.
- The pre-save backup is stored outside the active review copy.
Questions about editing DST files
Can I edit the DWG drawing through the DST?
No. The DST contains sheet-set structure and metadata. Edit drawing geometry and model or paper space in a DWG-capable CAD application.
Does AutoCAD have to be installed?
Not for the standalone Sheet Set Batch Editor. AutoCAD 2027 is only required for its optional in-AutoCAD plugin.
Should I keep a separate copy?
Yes. The editor creates a backup before writing, and a separate project copy gives you an additional, easy-to-understand recovery point.
